Baby Shower News!

Well, what my mom is calling the "Baby Shower of the Year" is well under way. She called me in the middle of my work day to let me know that she was locking in the reservation at the Armed Forces YMCA in Colorado Springs. Why the YMCA, you ask? Because we can't fit over 100 people into her house, that's why. No kidding, people. She's going all out and it's going to be a gigundo bash! You see, my mom is the President of the Filipino-American Community of Southern Colorado and she knows EVERYBODY! I'm not just talking about Filipinos either. I mean, she knows everyone in Colorado Springs, it seems. But everyone in the community is practically family and it is so nice to have that kind of support.

Anyway, she's telling me that I might have to rent a small U-Haul to bring all of my gifts home. How crazy is that? But it should be tons of fun because this a great group of people and they love to have fun. I can't wait. It's scheduled for April 3rd. I haven't sent invitations yet because I'm waiting on the sex of the baby so that I can establish some sort of theme for my family, since they're all putting it together for me.

I have a question though...I was told that typically, people only have baby showers for their first child. Is this true? Is this just an American custom? I only ask because it's not atypical for people in my culture--both Samoan and Filipino--to have baby showers for all their children. I was just wondering.

Getting to Know You Sunday & Race for the Cure

Happy Sunday everyone! I found out that it's Getting to Know You Sunday on one of my new favorite blog pages, The Life of An Army Wife. She found out about it at mannland5.com. Check out both sites! They're great! And it's simple...you just answer the questions MannLand5 asks and post it to a blog!
The questions...
1. How often do you wash/change your sheets?
As OCD as I am, you might find it surprising that I don't change my sheets all that often, especially since Malu isn't here and it's just me (and occasionally Lucy--although she stays on top of the comforter) on the bed. So I'd say about monthly.

2. When is your birthday?
I always say that my birthday is easy to remember. I say just think of the convenience store--7 Eleven. My birthday is on July 11th. I share this birthday with the likes of Richie Sambora, Yul Brynner, Georgio Armani, and John Quincy Adams.
3. Have you ever met a bloggy friend in real life?
Some of my friends are bloggers, but I know they don't really count. However, one of my blogger friends, Lindsay at What the Dinkins are Thinkin, has a friend who blogs (I think her name is Jennifer) and whose husband happens to be stationed at Fort Bliss in my unit. I hope that I get to meet her one of these days. She also has a great blog entitled Real Love Stories Have No Endings. Check it out!

4. Brad Pitt or George Clooney?
Um...Brad Pitt seems so played out these days. George Clooney will always be classically sexy to me. I'm going with George.

5. If you could change one thing about your body what would it be?
OMG...I would totally change my thighs/legs! I've been told by Samoans that the bottom half of my body is the Samoan part of me. I've got thunder thighs and huge calves. At least they're muscular, but if they weren't like this, it would be a heck of a lot easier to find a perfect pair of jeans! If I find a pair that fits my legs, it's almost always too big in the waist. It sucks!
6. How often do you wash your hair?
I have to wash my hair every day. It gets pretty oily.
7. Do you have pets?
I sure do. My Lucy is our 7-year old furbaby and one of the two loves of my life. She's as cute as can be right now, all curled up like a bean on top of my bed, even though she knows she's not supposed to be there!

8. How many social networks do you belong to..if you had to give up one, what would it be?
I belong to Facebook and Myspace and primarily use Facebook these days. As such, I've been trying to close my Myspace account, but doing that is a challenge especially since I opened that account with an email account that no longer exists. If you fall into this category, the crazy Myspace folks want you to take a picture of yourself holding a sign with your Myspace username on it and email it to them. I want to know what they do with that picture because they don't really say. So....I haven't closed it yet.

So that's me this Sunday! Now it's your turn!

This morning, my Auntie Daisy and I walked in the Susan G. Komen Race for the (Breast Cancer) Cure. We did the 5K non-competitive walk and although it was sunny out, the winds made for a chilly morning. But what the hey, it was for a great cause and we had a great time. It killed me not to run the 3.1 miles, so what do you do when you walk it? You people watch. I saw a few people I knew from post, including Major General Bromberg, the Fort Bliss Commanding General. But it was more intriguing to see those people who carried signs in memory of their loved ones who lost the fight to breast cancer and also those who carried signs saying they are survivors! These were the heroes that we honored today.

Since it's still early tonight, I'm trying to muster some energy to go through the boxes full of my clothes. Either that, or I can continue to watch Channing Tatum in the movie, Step Up, which I've seen a zillion times. Hmmm....I'm thinking Channing! The clothes can wait!
Oh, and I spoke to Malu long enough to mutter to him that I'd heard the baby's heartbeat the other day. Every time he calls, our phone calls get cut off, or the static is so bad that he can barely understand me. It's so frustrating. But it is nice to hear his voice, even for a few minutes and to know that he is okay. He sends everyone a hello as well as his love!

It's In There!

Anyone remember those old Prego commercials from the 1980s where, at the end, they would tout their infamous motto, "It's in There!" Okay, maybe some of you aren't that old, but that was my response to pretty much all my friends and co-workers in the aftermath of my first official visit with the OB-GYN.

First off, I cannot even describe just how excited I was to finally be in that clinic yesterday. When the nurse called my name (well, I wasn't sure that she was actually saying my name when she came out there because she said my last name all wrong--no surprise there), I pretty much jumped out of my seat, ran into the diagnostic room, and beamed so big as she wrapped that thingy around my arm to take my blood pressure. The nurse, who was very sweet, pretty much asked what my deal was and I was, like, "lady, you don't know what I have been through to get here!" I told her the whole story and she was, like, "Whoa!"

Eventually, she got me into the room where I met my nurse, Mrs. Ramirez. And they quickly got to work. At first I was so glad that I was there alone because it might have been embarassing for anyone to see this rookie mommy-to-be in action. I mean, I'm so used to seeing this stuff on TV, at the movies, or hearing stories from my mommy friends. But it was actually me in there, getting all that jelly squeezed on my tummy and having them rub that cold metal wand around it. But when I heard our baby's heartbeat for the first time...I immediately started bawling. The nurse handed me some tissues and asked me what was wrong, and of course I replied, "I wish my husband was here!" He would have loved to hear the "whoosh, whoosh, whoosh" sounds as much, or if not more, than I. Heck, it would have been nice to have my mom with me too. But hey, I hung in there. The nurse even let me do the sonogram a second time just so I could record the sounds on my cell phone for Malu. I thought that was very sweet. But the baby's heart beat was in the 150s, which I was told was normal. Thank goodness for that!

After that, they did a pap and then ordered me to make an appointment for an ultrasound across the hall. When I heard that, I knew that I wasn't going to be able to find out if our baby is a boy or a girl that day. Total disappointment. And when I went down the hall to make that appointment....no surprise, the place is so booked and the earliest I can get in is March 1st at (and I'm not joking) 11:45 pm! As in quarter to midnight. The place operates 24 hours which is why I'm surprised I couldn't get in at least within the next three days. But oh well, I'll take it. That's how backed up Fort Bliss is. Man, what's in the water around this city? Is everyone having a baby right now?

By the way, I had totally miscounted how far along I am. I think with all this waiting, I started to imagine extra weeks going by...seriously! When I found out in Iraq that I was pregnant, I was told that I was around 7 or 8 weeks along and when you tack all this time on to that, it equates to about 18 weeks. So when the nurse did some feeling around (ha ha, that sounds funny) she said, "well, although you believe you're 20-21 weeks along, what I'm feeling around your (I can't remember if she said uterus or not) and around your stomach, I'd say you're at about 18 weeks." And in doing the math, I realized she was spot on. No wonder everyone kept saying I don't look like I'm 5 months pregnant!

So when I called my mom and returned to work, she and my co-workers were ready to hear some news and they asked, "so what is the baby? boy or girl?" And my only response was, "well, it's....it's in there!" And letting them know that I wasn't going to know the sex of the baby for another week or so seemed to be more disappointing to them than I. I thought it was funny. But that's it for now you guys! Hang in there a little while longer with me! We're almost there!

My Ten Guilty Pleasures

I'm so unoriginal that I keep borrowing ideas from other people's blogs for blog posts and I found this one on a blog that I just started to follow, called A Yummy Mummy from a Pink Park Bench. I definitely have more than ten (who doesn't?), but I don't have all night!

1. Starbucks' (has to be grande-sized) White Chocolate Mocha (hot in the winter and over ice in the summer). I became addicted to these while I was in grad school. Ever since I got pregnant, I've been scared to have even the smallest amount of caffeine and I miss having my daily pick-me-up beverage. No wonder I can't stay awake through all these seminars! I recently found out that Starbucks has half-caff drinks. I'm soooo there!

2. Bubble Tea Drinks aka Boba (pictured). These are the drinks (usually smoothies) with small tapioca pearls (boba) that you sip through an extra large straw. I just found a place nearby that serves them and I was stoked. But Malu and I had a "usual" place that we used to go to in Colorado. We always asked for the same thing--large plum-flavored with extra boba. It was a little drive up place, and when the owners would see us coming they'd always say, "hey, it's the extra boba folks!" Heck, my mom went there once and the owner was like, "hey, you're the mom of the boba girl!" It was that bad. But if you've never had one, try it! They're delicious!

3. Ballet flats. Actually most of the shoes I own are flats, as I have flat feet and can't stand to be in heels for more than five minutes. They're just so comfy, I can't live without them. And I have soooo many pairs.

4. Shopping at Ross. Everytime I go there, I walk out with something, be it a few tops, a pair (or pairs) of shoes, a new serving platter, etc. That place is addictive.

5. Hard-backed Books. I'm weird, but when I go to Barnes and Noble to buy a new book, I almost always have to get the hard copy version. I think it's the OCD part of me that doesn't want the book to be all bent out of shape once I'm done with it.

6. Handwashing Dishes. I have a dishwasher, but there is something calming and therapeutic about handwashing them. Maybe it's really just the aromatherapeutic Palmolive dish soap I've been using. Hmmm.

7. Vaseline or Chapstick. Gotta have it on me. I hate having chapped lips!

8. Chocolate. Chocolate anything. Need I say more. I should have listed this first.

9. Bottled water. It has to be bottled. I have to be desperate to drink it from the tap, even though it's probably the same as drinking it bottled. I think this need arose after being deployed in Iraq the first time and all we had was bottled water. They had pallets of bottled water cases just outside our rooms--free for the taking. And they were like 2-liter sized bottles!

10. Facebook-ing. All day, every day...even at work. I close my office door when I do this. It is definitely an addiction!

So, friends...what are your guilty pleasures?

Ten on Tuesday

I told my friend, Melissa, that the Ten on Tuesdays thing is such a good idea. Seems like everyone is doing it these days! Thanks Melissa! Now, on to my ten...

1. I picked up my pregnancy ACUs (Army Combat Uniform) this afternoon! For once, the uniform gods have smiled down upon officers and have authorized us 2 free sets of these bad boys. Usually, these kinds of entitlements are only given to enlisted soldiers, but when I got to my unit I found out that officers can get them too--which is a great thing because a normal set of ACUs typically sets me back about $70. So that's almost $150 in savings! Anyway, when I got to the Central Issuing Facility on Fort Bliss, I was happily greeted by a gentleman who asked me what size I needed. I was like, huh? I wear medium-short in regular uniforms, but this list had the likes of 8S/8W/8L in both tops and bottoms. Huh? So after trying a few sets on...I ended up getting size 16S in both tops and bottoms. I don't know if I should feel good or bad about that, but I think they're cute. I won't wear the top until I get a little bigger, but I'm going to start wearing the pants. They have the elastic band along the waist and I am busting out of my old pants! Take a look...what do you think?

2. I LOVE World Market. It's my favorite home store. In fact, most of the stuff I own in my house is from that store. I love, love, love it. I've been searching far and wide for a good area rug for the dining room and I found it. It's just my style and goes with the orange and blue pillows that I have on our sectional.

3. Aside from the beautiful rug on the dining room floor...do you notice anything different about this room? Dude...all my kitchen stuff is gone! Don't know where I mustered the energy, but I did last night and got everything all prettied up and the dishes put away and organized. I'm starting to feel like my old self again.

4. Notice the cracks in the table? I also got this table at World Market. Imagine my dismay to see that, after removing this from storage, the table was starting to pull apart at the cracks. This is what I hate most about military moves. You can't really have any nice stuff because if you move a lot, like we have, things get ruined. But I've only had this table for a little over a year (and last displayed it in our Colorado house)...it's practically new. I can't see myself buying another dining room table for at least another couple of years.
5. I FINALLY got all of our tax documents together so that my Auntie Daisy (tax-filing extraordinaire!) can file our taxes! It was hard to do because I had to get Malu to pull his statements off of MyPay...the military online finance system. He's been so busy that he kept forgetting! Thanks baby!
6. Speaking of my Auntie Daisy, I can't say enough about how thankful I am that she is here in El Paso. She and her husband have taken such good care of me and I love them! She likes to check up on me at least daily and today, she called me to stop by to pick up some dinner at her house. It was so nice after a late night at work to pick up a nice, home-cooked meal. Thanks Auntie Daisy!
7. I start a seminar for work tomorrow that will last through the end of the week. We'll be learning about Afghanistan. Exciting. I just hope that I can stay awake through it.
8. My mom is going to see New Moon with my sister tonight. She'd read the book and has been dying to see the movie. I can't believe my mom's as much of a Twilight freak as my sister, my cousins and I.
9. I bought about five nightlights for the house. I've been having trouble sleeping because I get scared of being alone at night. Hence, I'm having a security system installed in this house over the weekend.
10. Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait for my doctor's appointment on Friday. If I find out what we're having, I'm going to get registered at Babies 'R Us, Target, and Burlington Coat Factory this weekend!

14 on the 14th

This past week, my friend Melissa had a post entitled Ten on Tuesday where she listed ten things that had gone on during her week or just random thoughts. Since I'm a day late and a dollar short...and since it's February 14th...I'm going with 14 random thoughts and things. Plus, it's a nice and easy way for me to get caught up since it's been nearly a month since my last post.
1. This is my second Valentine's Day without my hubby because he was also deployed last year around this time. Not too many of you know, but Malu returned from a year-long deployment to Iraq this past August. But because I was scheduled to deploy in the fall, I'd asked him to jump on another deployment just so we could get on the same deployment cycle--to which he happily obliged. Well, we all know what ended up happening. I got knocked up, had to redeploy, and Malu still ended up deploying. But you know, when I think about it, I can be thankful for the fact that for the five years we've been together, we've actually spent more V-Days together than apart. When Malu called today to wish me a Happy Valentine's Day we reminisced about our first V-Day together at Fort Bragg, NC. He'd given me an orchid because he hates how roses die so quickly; then challenged me to keep this orchid alive, knowing that I don't have much of a green thumb. Well, the thing was alive long enough for the orchids to bloom. It lived a total of two weeks. So much for that. To this day, Malu says I am incapable of keeping plants alive. It's a good thing that I took of picture of the pretty orchid before it bit the big one.

2. I'd sent Malu a care package full of Valentine's Day goodies both for him and his company. I also sent him Jack Johnson's newest CD as well as some of his favorite snacks. Me? I convinced Malu to let me get us a new 42" plasma screen TV. It's the first TV I've bought since college and is the biggest screen I've ever graced my house with. Luckily, I had great friends to help me set it up. I've never watched TV this much in my life. I love it. Thank you honey!

3. I moved into this house on January 22nd. It's a brand new house on the east side of El Paso where much of the area is brand new. As you can tell, the house is very small. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms--which is good enough for just me, Lucy, our little baby, and for Malu (whenever he gets to come to visit). Plus, we don't plan on living in El Paso long enough to buy some property around here, so it is ideal. Right now, I'm using the two-car garage as extra storage. Pre-deployment, I was in an apartment and had to store a whole bunch of stuff in a storage facility, but not anymore. The garage still has enough room for one of our cars, which is good.

4. I am SLOWLY putting this house together. When I first moved in, I had called Malu crying because I was so overwhelmed with all the stuff that we have and by the thought of having to put all of it away. Usually, my OCD-self would have had all of this knocked out in about a day. But to be honest, I work such long hours and I have been too tired to even think about finishing putting stuff away or unpacking the boxes I have left. I didn't realize how many kitchen items I have. Most of it is still in boxes in the garage, but the essentials are currently on my dining table waiting to be put into the cupboards. Oh, and if you're wondering what's up with the door...the builder has yet to return to put blinds on that bad boy. So for the time being, I've got paper bags taped to it for security reasons. Ghetto!

You think that's bad...this is the soon-to-be nursery; jam-packed with boxes full of books. Not to mention every box of clothes I have are still stacked in my bedroom and the other guest room has boxes stacked in it as well. I'd set a goal to have it all done this weekend. Yeah, that didn't really pan out. I need help. My parents are coming in March. Maybe they can help me when they get here.

5. This is how I know that I've been in El Paso for a year. My first entry of 2009 was of the Texas vs. The Nation game. I had gone to that game with all of my soldiers. It was actually my first post here in El Paso. Well, last weekend, I'd gone to the game with my friend, Jennifer. I'd actually arrived to the game late, but in time to indulge in one of my favorite things.....stadium food. El Pasoans really know how to throw down at sporting events and festivals. That day, I'd gotten an order of Super Nachos. Oh my goodness...delicious! One of my biggest cravings these days is jalapenos. I don't really like anything spicy, but oh well. Gotta love the cravings. The weather was spectacular that day. We got TONS of sun. Hey, it was held at the Sun Bowl for a reason.

6. Speaking of cravings, another one satisfied at the game was that of the FUNNEL CAKE! Oh, so yummy! No football game is complete without one. Funnel cakes...I love you.

I've been going out of my way for cravings these days. Unfortunately, I have to make long drives just to get them. Like yesterday, I'd driven 20 miles to west El Paso just to indulge in Kinley's House Coffee & Tea's infamous crepes. And not just any crepes--their strawberry, banana, nutella, whipped cream crepes! Let's just say it was well worth the drive. I ate the entire thing. Not all of my cravings, however, are for junk food. I mostly crave fruits and veggies with carrots, strawberries, papayas, oranges, and mangoes at the forefront. I'm getting bigger by the day, it seems. I wonder what I'll be craving tomorrow or within the next week or so.

7. I'm guess-timating that I am in my 5th month of pregnancy. I'd know more accurately if I didn't have to cancel my appointment on February 2nd. I was asked by my superiors to do it because of a very important meeting with the post 2-star general. The only appointment I could get was for February 19th...this Friday! I should actually have a pap as well as an ultrasound. They should be able to tell me the sex of the baby which will make it easier for me to SHOP!!! All I know is that I don't care if the President of the United States is visiting my unit this Friday. I am NOT missing this appointment!

8. I've pretty much been rooting for having a girl. I know Malu's rooting for a boy, but hey. I wouldn't be too disappointed with that either because you know what? If that does happen, I'm going with a jungle theme. I went to Kirkland's this afternoon (LOVE Kirkland's) and saw these:

I am totally in love with them. Right now, they're on sale for $19.99 a piece. So if I really don't find out what we're having on Friday, I'm going to have a hissy fit. I'd love to add some monkeys to the motif (I've seen some really good jungle stuff at Burlington's). Malu plays songs from Jack Johnson's Curious George soundtrack and it all reminds me of him--hence the fascination. I can't wait to start on the nursery. Hmmm....maybe I should focus on getting all those boxes out of there first.

9. I read the book, "A Time Travelers Wife," about two months ago when I was waiting on my flight out of Iraq. I've been dying to see the movie. I bought it today and am going to watch it tonight. I'm sure I'll be crying. I hate being alone on Valentine's Day.
10. I LOVE 4-day weekends, like this one. I've slept for pretty much all of it--basically just catching up on all the sleep I miss during the work weeks. I've been working my tail off at my new unit and despite how hectic things are and my past-8 o'clock evenings (I swear we don't get paid nearly enough for the extra hours we all work), I am liking my co-workers as well as my own section of soldiers. I was actually told by my immediate boss that they are ready to lock me into my position for good. Apparently, they're pleased with the work I've been doing so far, which is a relief. The only thing is that I am exhausted during the week. I work 12-13 hour days non-stop and by the time I get home, take Lucy out, eat dinner and shower, it's 10:30-11:00 pm. A few hours later, it's time to get up and do it all over again. Worse...there aren't any four-day weekends in March (we typically have one every month)! Yikes! I can't wait to hit my 7th month. The Army has a policy where pregnant females can't work longer than 8 hours a day. So I'll be cashing in on that soon!

11. Since I found out I was pregnant, I kinda took running out of my workout regimen and have been sticking to long walks with Lucy throughout each day (we go three times a day on weekends). Lucy's been such a good sport. But we had a brigade run this past Thursday--a four mile run with the entire unit--about 3,000 people altogether. I love unit runs. They're so much fun and I hated that I was missing out. Long story short, I ended up running in it. Usually, my position as the HR Officer (also known as the S-1; S is for Staff; don't ask--it's Army lingo; and I'm the adjutant to the commander), has me running at the front of the formation behind the commander. Because I didn't think I was going to run, I had my warrant officer run in my stead. Well, I was supposed to leave the formation once everyone head out. Well, I started running and thought about running just down to the end of the street. It was a good pace and I felt great, so I kept on going. Next thing you know, I didn't want to stop and ran all four miles. I eventually slowed down because I was scared about what could happen, having not run in a while. I ran the last half of it at my own pace and stayed with the group. I was pretty proud of myself.
12. My second or third entry of last year was of the Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Run that I did with a bunch of friends. Another way I know I've been in El Paso for a while--I'm doing it again next Sunday. My Auntie Daisy and I are doing the 3-mile non-competitive walk. I hope we get good weather and I'm happy to support such a great cause.
13. Our Lucy turned seven last month and I can definitely tell she's older. She still loves to go on her daily walks, but I fear that she's got signs of early arthritis because she limps everytime she stands up after laying down for long periods of time. I can tell that she loves being with mommy again, but I know she misses Misty and Lucy back in Colorado with my mom and dad. They will all be visiting at the end of March. We can't wait to see them. I'm also wondering how Lucy will handle having a baby in the house. She's so mild mannered and easy going, but gets particularly annoyed with little kids from time to time. It makes me nervous. Any tips for my mommy friends with pets out there?
14. Finally, once I get this house completely settled, I'm going to start baking again. I hope the Tuesdays with Dorie group will let me back in!
Well, that's all for now! I'm gonna go back to watching the Food Network on my ginormous TV. I can watch this channel all day long!
