Happy Halloween!

I started my day out with my trusty sidekick, Anna. We took the dogs to the Garden of the Gods for a hike. It was another gorgeous day out...hardly a cloud in the sky. We just couldn't get over the fact that it is practically November and we were wearing shorts/capris out. The doggies had a great time. I struggled to get a picture of the dogs together. Lucy is actually scared of the camera (mainly it's flash; I think it reminds her of lightning), so whenever she sees or hears me pull the darn thing out, she runs for cover. So I figured the best way to do it was to catch them from behind. Now don't they just look like the best of friends? Or maybe, like me, you're just lookin' at a nice pair of dog butts!

There were tons of people out there today. Many packed picnic lunches and were snacking away as we passed by. We were so bummed that we hadn't thought of the idea. Anyway, some people were walking around with costumes, but not just people, but our furry friends! I forget the name of this dog. I just call it the dreadlock dog. This one was dressed as a chicken and I had to take a picture. I can't even see the poor thing's eyes! He's still very cute!

It's late and I'm tired, but I had a great Halloween thanks to family and friends. I didn't have tons of people over, but enough to enjoy the day and make it memorable. Of course, Anna was here to help me pass out candy to the little kiddies. Since it actually wasn't snowing out this year, the kids came out in full force. Well, not exactly. But definitely more than in all the years I've lived in Colorado because it's usually snowing by now!

I had about 40 or so kids stop in and was only able to get a picture of this rousing little group. I took the picture because Malu loves the SAW movies and that darn clown guy (or whatever the heck he is) always freaks me out!

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great Halloween. I'm going to hit the sack now. I can barely stay awake, which is a good thing. I need all the sleep I can get!

Around This Time....Back Then

I think I'm going to start doing this every once in a while just to conjure up some really cool memories, so long as I have a picture to go along with it just so you can imagine what it was like to be there! I thought Halloween was the perfect time to start since we had an awesome time last year. A few weeks before Halloween, we carved pumpkins at mom's house and went to a local haunted house (which is at the mining museum in northern Colorado Springs and is actually one of the top-ranked in the country). Here we are about to carve out our masterpieces! Look at my honey in front!

Good friends (practically family), Brian and Karrah, hosted a Halloween party that my entire family attended, including my grandma. The food was amazing and we all got a hoot out of the costumes. Leave it to my dear sweet husband to make a lasting Halloween impression. His snake-charmer costume was such a hit...and my grandma just about had a stroke from laughing so much at it! If you can't tell, there's a thin string connecting the snake to Malu's flute. Crazy guy! We miss you so much this year!

I'm sure Roz's and my costumes look familiar to everyone. They made an appearance at last weekend's Halloween party, which I blogged about a few days ago. Hey, no harm or foul in re-wearing last year's costumes! And my brother was Dog the Bounty Hunter. His fiance, Jolene, was appropriately dressed as Dog's wife...gosh, what's her name?

Anyway, Karrah (not shown) was Cupid and she made a giant heart for people to pose and take pictures with. Here's me and my sweet love....and our beloved snake!

Well, I'm expecting tons of trick-or-treaters tomorrow since the weather's been unbelievably warm for the past few days. It should be fun, but a lot more quiet this year since everyone's kinda doin' their own thing! Happy Halloween everyone!

Tag: Random Facts

My friend, Liz, tagged me to list 6 random facts about myself and to subsequently tag a few other bloggers to do the same. Before I list my random facts, let me tell you a little bit about Liz (she's the pretty lady to the left of me in the picture--this OLD picture, by the way)! She and I have been friends since, gosh, March 2004. We were stationed together at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and she actually replaced me as the Adjutant (for my civilian friends--Human Resources Officer) for the Air Traffic Control Battalion we were assigned to at the time. Fortunately, it wasn't because I got fired, but transferred to another job. Thankfully, I only moved up the street because we were able to remain friends through my other close friends (i.e. Chrissy, the other girl in the photo, and my other best buds, Jocelyn and Melody).

Anyway, let me just say that the moment I met Liz, I thought she was gorgeous. And she has such a wonderful personality and, if I may say so, is very intelligent and talented. Would you believe me if I told you she's a pilot? Well, she is. Too cool, huh? Her husband is also an Army pilot and they have two beautiful children. Liz is participating in the Army's grad school program, like me, only she's at the infamous University of Southern California (whose football team my husband LOVES!) and is enjoying her time close to her family and friends there.

Okay, so this list was difficult to compile. Unlike Liz and Misty (who was also tagged by Liz to do this) I lack all creativity in writing and coming up with cool stuff to say, so bear with me:

1) When I was young, my family and I did TONS of traveling, mostly across the United States. We were a military family, so we moved a lot and when we did we drove from post to post. Until we got an SUV (when we were in our teens) we all crammed into our Oldsmobile sedan and literally traveled from one side of the nation to the other that way. We've been or driven through mostly every state in the continental United States with the exception of some northernmost states like North and South Dakota, Alaska, and Rhode Island. We've driven from California to New York TWICE and back and forth between New York and Florida a few times. We've also done New York to California by way of Texas. Don't ask. We've just been to a lot of places and have tons of pictures to prove it! We also amassed a substantial collection of state pennants, which are totally lost in the sauce somewhere at my folks house; if they're even there at all!

2) When I was about 10 or 11 and living in Hawaii, I almost died from an allergic reaction to the wheat germ that was present in a stack of wheat pancakes that my Uncle Ronald whipped up one evening. Tripler Hospital was a long ways from my grandparents' house, where we lived at the time and I could barely breathe by the time we got there. My nasal passages had swollen up. As a matter of fact, I had severe allergies growing up. I had a massive allergy attack at a high school track meet in Upstate New York, apparently from the high concentration of pollen in the area. I had to be rushed a long ways to the hospital on post. My friend Melissa can ask her mom about the whole incident because she was the one that drove me to the hospital. Anyone who has ever seen me during or after an allergy attack knows how horrible I look. My entire face (mostly the eyes) swell shut and I can barely breathe. Among my pollen and wheat germ allergies, a test revealed that I was allergic to seafood (but not anymore, thank God), dust, cats, cockroaches (huh?), down feathers, and NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen--I still am allergic).

3) When I was 2, I fell off the front porch stairs in Germany, riding on one of those kiddie rollers. I was following my mom out the door when I did this. I busted my front two teeth and it wasn't until late in my sophomore year of high school that my mom decided to let me get my teeth bonded. Thank goodness. Before that, my front teeth were a mess. I couldn't even whistle (still can't). So yeah, they're fake. But don't they make me look like I had braces?

4) The first and only thing I've ever stolen was a pack of gum out of the AAFES store at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki when I was about 5 years old. Talk about embarassing! My mom ended up buying the pack of gum for me anyway. Talk about spoiled!

5) In middle school (Carthage Middle School), I won the Spelling Bee for the school for the two years I was there and ended up going to the regional spelling bee one year. I was eliminated for the word "pedagogist". Yeah, looks easy, but it didn't sound easy! To this day, I'm still anal about spelling and constantly correct people who can't spell!

6) I am six years older than my husband, although I have to admit that he acts six years older than I do. Sad, but true. He's younger than my younger brother. Shoot, his older sister is still younger than my younger brother. When I graduated from high school, he was just leaving elementary school! Need I say more? But the last time he came home (when he surprised me by flying in early for the weekend), he flew into Denver which is about two hours away from where we live. I had class that evening, so I couldn't pick him up. So I said, "why don't you just rent a car and drive home?" and he says, "hello...I'm not 25 yet, duh!" My friend and I got a good laugh out of that. Turns out that he could rent a car after all (and did), but had to pay an additional fee for being under 25. Funny.

Mischief by Misty

One of my favorite blogs is called Mischief by Misty, a friend that I met through another friend, Liz. However, this blog is about my parents' dog named Misty--a year-old Australian Shepherd Mix (or so we were told) who is adorable, but quite mischievous from time to time. I actually call her Mischief every once in a while--she's just that rambunctious, but what else can you expect from a puppy, right? Anyway, this morning at around 7:00-ish, my mom calls me in a panic about something being wrong with Misty. For whatever reason, she couldn't walk on her hind legs. Mom starts bawling over the phone, insisting that I drive over to help assess the situation, as if I had any pertinent solutions to render. I took one look at Lucy and said, "we have to see what's wrong with your sister!" and she got all excited and ready to go. Without hesitation, we bolted out the door--me, haphazardly dressed (I didn't even make time to brush my teeth or my hair--gross!) even though I had to open mom's office in a little over an hour. When we arrived, the scene was quite depressing. My sister, grandma, brother and mom (in tears) sat in a circle around Misty trying to motivate her to stand up. I kinda sensed that she was still okay. She was very much alert and her tail was wagging in its usual wild manner, only she couldn't make her way over to me. Everyone suspected that it might have been the medicine she consumed last night (somehow she'd gotten her paws on grandma's medicine bottle), but I argued that she would've at least been unconscious or seizing or something. Whatever, my brother carried her to my car and he, my mom and I headed out to the vet. When Jon tried to carry her out of the car in front of the vet's office, Misty didn't want any of it. Instead, she comes out of the back of the car herself and proceeds to walk around the parking lot! By this time, mom was already inside the vet's office and I went in and yelled out to her that Misty was walking. She came out, and the three of us just started cracking up laughing at the poor doggie. She was still limping though and after further examination it was deemed that Misty was suffering from a pulled muscle and sentenced to three days confinement and pain medications. This is not surprising considering Misty is just a bundle of energy and can't seem to ever keep still! So there you have it! All kinds of emotions running rampant in the Ioapo Family this fine Tuesday morning! The things we do for our dogs! But really, these furry things are like our children and I'm sure you dog owners out there truly understand. Shoot, I have pet insurance for Lucy because of things like this! Anyway, now I'm sitting at mom's office hoping customers won't come in to see me like this, looking like I just rolled out of bed (which I basically did). I had to come here directly from the vet's office! I hope you guys had a good laugh. Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Late Weekend Recap

Sorry for the late post on this weekend folks! Yesterday, I only had enough energy to update my cooking blog, which you definitely should check out. Now it's almost midnight and I can barely stay awake to do this, but I'm forcing myself to. What a weekend it was! Anna and I spent most of it together. Since the both of us have essentially the same schedule from day to day, not to mention the fact that both of our sweethearts are overseas, it totally makes sense that we're together practically 24-7. I told her that she might as well make me a key to her house, since I'm always there either eating, studying or hanging out and watching television. She's augmented my TV habit by getting me hooked on the Army Wives show (even though I think it's completely tacky) and on the Office (very funny!). We sure do enjoy our time together.

On Friday, we planned a shopping day. She desperately needed a new wardrobe and I just wanted to tag along. Before that, we took the dogs to the park to play ball. It's sometimes essential for us to get Howard out of the house and zonked out by making him run and walk all over the place. He's as rambunctious as a puppy can get, much to Lucy's dismay. But they definitely have so much fun while out there chasing those softballs! Look at them, they are exhausted! After dropping them off, we went to Kohl's to take advantage of the weekend sales...and there were plenty. We were there for almost two hours trying on loads of clothes. I managed to walk out of there with just over $100 in merchandise and Anna about the same. Only buyer's remorse later kicked in and saw me returning about half the stuff this morning. Oh, how things have changed! Years ago, I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Oh well.

The next evening, I accompanied Anna to a friend's house for a neighborhood Halloween party. She didn't have a costume, so I let her use the princess/queen/renaissance woman--whatever--costume I wore last year. I borrowed my sister's sock hop costume from last year so she and I looked equally dull against the more provocatively-dressed females (suprisingly, most of them were mothers), wearing their practically-lingerie costumes. Actually, there was one, very pregnant woman who was dressed as a belly dancer. Her huge belly protruded over her long skirt, while she donned a piece of cloth over her bra. Very scantily clad. I wouldn't have had the guts! Seriously...the best costume I saw out there was on this little guy:

This is Joey...the littlest, most adorable scarecrow you will ever see! His mom had a sexy Dorothy outfit thingy and was totally workin' it. But who's hatin'? Another costume that totally cracked me up was on this big guy:

Meet Dr. Howie Feltersnatch, MD, the Gynecologist. Kinda gross, but totally got a kick out of this one! And then my last favorite was the tired, stay-at-home mom, complete with bathrobe--one pocket had a diaper stuffed into it and the other, a stuffed animal. She also had streaked mascara on her eyes. Very funny!

All in all, it was a fun time and just what I needed to keep me out of the house and sulking by myself. Sad to say, although I really do want to have children, this party may have been one of the best forms of birth control ever. There were a zillion kids running around, ages 3 to 12. Take those kids + tons of sugar + tons of caffeine + tons of kids' games = CHAOS!!! It was out of control. Screaming and yelling everywhere!!! It was sort of entertaining.

Late that evening, Roz and I made some doggie biscuits out of a mix I purchased from Cost Plus World Market--one of my absolute favorite stores (a lot of the stuff in my house is from there). I'd originally seen the mix on a friend's blog, Mischief by Misty. For a few dollars, you can make your four-legged friend almost 50 doggie biscuits. Lucy just loved them and we had so much fun making it!

The rest of the weekend was pretty laid back and I am happy to report that I was able to get a full night's rest last night as well as a long nap this afternoon. I've been having problems sleeping lately, worrying about Malu's safety, so anytime I can get more than 3 hours of sleep these days is a true feat! I last spoke to him this morning and all is well. He and his team were waiting on a flight out to their operating base. I sure hope they were able to get on an aircraft and out safely. Please continue to keep us in your prayers!

Out of Class Early!

Yoo hoo! We actually got out of Operational Behavior class early tonight--almost two hours early! We have a test on Thursday, so all we did was go over one chapter and then did a test review. However, I don't get to go home any sooner because my carpool buddies are still in their accounting class. That's okay, it gives me plenty of time to study, which I'm not doing right at the moment, obviously!

I can't say that anything exciting has happened since my last post; just business as usual. My classes these next few weeks are my last and have not taxed my brain nearly as much as my last set of classes. Even if they did, I probably wouldn't be motivated to do my best. The end is near...I'm truly at the home stretch right now. I'll soon be reentering the real world and these carefree school days will become a distant memory! While I'm excited to go back to work, I must admit that I will miss just being a student. In the meantime, I'm just taking things day by day and trying to enjoy myself in the process. I constantly surround myself with great friends and my loving family and stay well-engaged in any activity possible just so I'm out of the house. Suffice it to say, all is well here in the Rocky Mountains!

I helped mom out at her office from morning to noon and when I got home, I found Malu's duffle bag waiting on the doorstep. He actually gave me a head's up that it was on its way, but I was so excited to see it. I'm very sentimental, so it was actually an emotional process, sifting through some of Malu's things. The contents of the bag where those things that he didn't have room to carry with him into theater, like extra sets of ACUs, a set of civilian clothes and two pairs of boots. Call me odd, but I immediately buried my face in one of his ACU tops and could smell small traces of him although overpowered by the old, crusty scent of the standard-issue, olive drab, green duffle bag (my military friends know that smell!); a sweet reminder nevertheless.

Funny, when we met during our first tour in Iraq, I'd ordered a blanket for him that had a message embroidered into it. Gosh, I can't remember, but I think it says something cheesy like "sweet dreams" and "all my love, Michelle" on it. I'd given it to him because my unit was leaving Iraq a few months before his and I wanted him to have something to sleep with in the meantime. Well, he'd taken the blanket with him to New Jersey and when I'd asked him (this was yesterday) if he had sent his blanket back with his duffle, he just laughed and told me the story about how he had struggled just to make room for the darn thing even though all of his bags were jam-packed. How sweet is that? Nah, I think he just knew better than to send it back. He knew he'd have hell to pay. Just kidding! He really is that sweet.

Malu is doing well. Since he's been in Kuwait, he's called me every morning, sometime after breakfast, and every evening just before he goes to bed. He does this even though the phone/internet tent is a good walk from where he and his detachment sleeps. Now, isn't that sweet too? He said that his teammates commented that he calls his wife way too much. My question is: why aren't they calling their wives that much? Hmmm. But we're just taking advantage of the opportunity because once he departs that area of operation, who knows what the communication situation will be at his next post?

He also got promoted at a ceremony this morning. Most people know that Malu is very outgoing, very spontaneous, and very entertaining. Well, when he was given a chance to comment on his promotion, he broke out in the "haka", a traditional Polynesian war dance (from New Zealand, actually). In case you've never seen or heard of it, click here and you'll be directed to YouTube for a look-see! I can only imagine how much fun he had doing this...and even more, what his unit thought as they saw him chanting away all by his lonesome. If anything, they probably know now more than ever not to mess with the guy.

Well, I'm back home now and it's 11:05 p.m. I'm contemplating making some cookies from a recipe out of Better Homes and Gardens. If you check my cooking blog tomorrow, maybe you'll see if I really did stay up a little longer just to soothe my aching sweet tooth! Good night to all and thanks for listening to my raving!

Happy Birthday Mom!

She'll probably kill me for revealing her age, but my mommy turned 53 today! Actually, October 18th is her first birthday. Can you believe that she really has two birthdays? No, really. Her other one is on the 25th. How, you ask? Well, when my great-grandfather brought my mom and her siblings (there were 7 of them) to the United States from the Philippines way back when, he mixed up all of their birthdays when he the signed their immigration papers. It's always a funny story to tell.

We originally made plans at PF Chang's for her birthday dinner. Halfway through today, mom suggested that we stay closer to home (because PF Chang's is a long ways from here) and go to Dragon King, which is literally three miles down the road from my place. We all agreed that it was a great idea and cancelled our PF Chang's reservation. We'd definitely get more for our money at Dragon King anyway, and I must admit that the food is so much better. And it was! My Auntie Shirley and Uncle Tony joined in on the fun and we all left completely satisfied!

I'm thinking now that I should have taken pictures of the dishes. I ordered an almond chicken dish and my brother ordered the "Happy Family" which is just a mixture of vegetables, beef, chicken and shrimp. Delicious! Here we are enjoying our dishes!

Uncle Tony was able to get a picture of the entire dinner crew. Would you believe that this is actually a small gathering for us? And then another picture of the Ioapo crew!

After dinner, we all came here (to my place) for dessert (as if we needed any--we were so full!). Whole Foods has a tantalizing chantilly cake topped with fresh fruit. Okay, can you say DEEEEEEEELICIOUS??? It looks so rich, but the frosting is actually very light. It's a white cake with more chantilly frosting between its two layers. I know I say lots of things are to die for, but this cake really is! If you have a Whole Foods store near you, I wholeheartedly suggest you go there and buy this cake. Sure, it's about $25 dollars, but you won't regret it! Mom also walked away with a few good gifts, so all in all it was a wonderful day despite a last minute change in plans!

Here's to another year mom and to many, many more! I've been truly blessed to have your love and support both as a mother and as a true friend. I love you!
